What I would like to see, and what I think would be considered "fight science" is if they examined "how" people win fights.  The trickery, set ups, etc.

BataanVet,
I see where you are coming from with the provided video clips but I could not disagree with you more.  Other than terminology I don't see much that Dog Brothers practitioners, instructors and teachers are doing that did not come from somewhere traditionally art oriented (refer to the quote Crafty states about consistent terminology).  Its important to DBMA to recognize the art in which each technique is taken from and I think Guro Crafty has done an outstanding job of relaying this to his students.  Something of which you need more than just the promo clips to see.  While you will not always see the twelve djurus and other recorded technique sequences familiar to PS, Dog Brothers Teachers have been greatly influenced and have studied Silat rather extensively to help facilitate their growth in the arts and fighting.

« on: August 14, 2006, 06:31:10 PM »
I think that the footwork of Capoeira would have a great base for fighting in the gatherings.  From the studying I have done of the art there is a lot of False Lead and angular footwork.  Take a peak at the Kali Tudo DVD and see if it reminds you of footwork you may have experienced in Capoeira.  Also, keep in mind that not all of the art has to be applicable to the gathering in order for it to be justified.  You hear many people saying stuff like "wrestling beats striking" , "Muay Thai beats TKD" , etc. when in reality it can simply be an attribute gained by a specific art that facilitates a good fight.

Allow me to throw out a few quotes to add to this thread:

Concerning preservation I whole heartedly agree with what has been said many times by Crafty &TD, "we are not inventing anything, just rediscovering it."

"drills and such are simply a recording system." ~ CD

Culture:

"To better understand the martial arts, you must understand the history.
To understand the history, you must understand the culture.
To understand the culture you must understand the philosophy and philosophers. . .
What they were trying to express to the people of that time period." ~ Said by Guro Dan (not sure who it was written by)

The black padded head gear that is featured in the DLO promo I got online.  They are meant for weapon sparring (although I would only recommend soft sticks) and it comes with a face cage.  You should be able to Google it and find what you need.

And all the more reason not to assume that someone is just going to punch you.  The whole "always assume they have a weapon" would have helped in this situation.

I'll go against the crowed with this one and state that I see a lot of things to learn from in these clips.  Just observing the human animal and how one reacts is enough.  While I agree that if one cannot fight back it is a worthless clip I do think it is very informing to observe body language.

IMO, after the belt was put around his waist the title got to AA's head way too fast and he forgot that fighting was involved in his sport.  He trained like he was at the top with no one worthy to actually take the title.

Tito came in ready to rock, but rumors credible to me had Ken Shamroid not having trained seriously at all. To my eye, KS charged and was saved by the ref from the shame of being badly KO'd. That UFC people would be putting out feelers for another fight between these two is a warning flag as to what this one was.

I am looking at this as a best case situation for the two of them.  Tito gets the joy of knowing he won while Ken doesn't think the stop was justified.  I can't think of a better way of this fight going.

Nick,
You have done something many people these days are not willing to do.  You have gone out of your comfort zone and taken on something new.  Personally I believe that fighting is fighting no matter how many arts you study.  Just like any other art, the more genres you study the better you will get.  I can?t tell you how much studying Jazz has helped me in playing Rock music.  While I am not an artist I have heard the same thing about drawing and painting.  That said, I don?t think taking on the addition of MT & the FMA?s at once is too much.  In fact, when I started as a kid JKD, MT, FMA, Boxing & Grappling were all thrown at me at once.  ?Research your own experience, absorb what is useful, discard what is useless and add what is specifically your own.?  Take it all in and gather things that work for you.

In that respect stick work has helped by giving me the positive externality of an insanely strong grip.  This has drastically helped out my grappling.  The FMA?s in general have helped out my footwork for Boxing and MT too.  JKD trapping (while many people think it does not work) has given me the upper hand in grappling, boxing and MT as well.

Keep us updated on your experience,

You can see Tito use this against Chuck as well.  I think what he is trying to do is do a high shield but rotate it into the straight punch.  I love to use them when I am sparring as many people don't expect them.  Your right about the rules, it would be a great addition to a lot of peoples games.

I suggest changing stance and grip in a repetitive metronome type of way.  Similar to Siniwali I have found that the body and mind sync better when the bilateralism is trained in drills.  A grip/stance changing drill should do the same thing.

First off,
May props on the site, it is very well put together.  Question, is there a rule against anything lighter than a WEKAF helmet or is that by choice?  I don't see any fencing masks.  The reason I ask is because I noticed in the clips there was less protection of the head.  I assume this may ultimately lead to more overall damage to the core of the body such as in the picture on the right of the site.  This is however a very limited assumption as I don?t have much to go by; it was simply the first thing that stuck out to me.  Great creativity with the ?fight formats? and such in the Event Details section!

Bat vs. Gun - - - - -  Read on:

Murder charges filed against State College manFrom CDT staff reportsSTATE COLLEGE -- A State College man was arraigned on charges of first- and third-degree murder this afternoon after State College police found a body and signs of a violent struggle at the man's home on Nimitz Avenue.
Andrew A. Rogers, 28, was being taken to the Centre County Courthouse annex for a bail hearing following his arraignment before District Judge Allen Sinclair at about 2 p.m.
State College police have scheduled a news conference to provide details of the investigation at 3:30 p.m.
According to court papers filed by police, Rogers and two men who were at his home Thursday night became involved in a violent struggle.
Rogers told police the struggle began when he saw one of the men looking at some cash he had. Rogers told police he used a rolling pin and a baseball bat during the fight with the two men, and that one of the men pulled a gun from a backpack.
According to the account Rogers gave police, he hit the man with a baseball bat, and he dropped the gun. Rogers said he saw the other man pick up the gun and point it at him, and does not remember anything else, according to court records.
According to the affidavit filed by police, Rogers said he awoke to find himself on top of one of the men. Rogers said he ripped off his own, bloody clothes, then checked the man's throat and couldn't find a pulse, according to court records.
According to police, Rogers told them he then washed off, packed a suitcase, took a wallet from the man's body and left the house.
State College police around 8 p.m. Monday were contacted by Uniontown police, who said Rogers went to them, said he wanted to talk to someone and said, "I think there may be a body in my kitchen."
State College police went to Rogers' home and found a decomposing body lying in the kitchen, with multiple injuries to the face and head, according to court papers. Blood and evidence of a scuffle was seen throughout the home.

I think we should settle this and try it for ourselves.  Maybe best out of twenty tries.  There are some foam bats at Wal-Mart right now that have some substance to them.  I might pick up a few and see what our group comes up with.  The same thing might have to be tried for the Knife vs. Gun.  Obviously the bat isn?t going to feel like a real bat but we could consider any shots to the head has a ?win.?  Similarly a "bang" with the gun pointed at knife man could be considered a win.

If I had the knife I think I would most likely close empty hand then go from there.  ?Surviving Edged Weapons? has a good clip of Guro I. taking down an officer with a blade before he could draw his piece.  The only thought I would take into account is ?don?t carry anything that doesn?t fit comfortably up your @$$.?  Once I closed I would make sure the gun was neutralized then take out the knife.
