Knife.  If the footwork is good a person with a knife should be able to close the distance while/after the person with the bat swings.

Island Dog,
First off great fights Sunday, it was a pleasure to meet you and see you fight!  I would start off by searching eBay for a ?3-Weapon fencing mask? which is where I got mine, I think I got two for $100.  They run a little big so I suggest going a size smaller than you would normally get (I learned the hard way).  As for the gloves, I saw Nick had some new toys that played off of the Mylec style but I like my ?Youth? Franklin Street Hockey gloves from Dick?s Sporting goods.  If you have smaller hands you can stretch them out but if your hands are larger you might need the adult version.  The only real difference is that the Adult cover the wrist a little more.  Hope This Helps!

Hey All,
It?s getting down to the wire so I would like to call out anyone from the following list that is experiencing their first gathering/fight.  I assume that all ?Dogs? would be out of this category so I will exclude them.  The second stipulation is that you are within my weight range 155 lbs give or take a pound or few.  Those of you who know that you are not within my specs it would be appreciated if you are able to contact me so I am not trying to find out who you are on Sunday.  PM me when you get a chance, looking forward to any of your responses.

Shane,
If I may take a stab at this, I personally believe that MMA training while it does have a lot of relevant places in Self Defense also lacks a lot.  Clench, Ground Work and striking are great but won?t stand up to the brutal reality of what we need when faced with a situation where we need to defend ourselves.  Take your GNP (ground and pound) defense for instance.  Are you working in the essentials?  Including but not limited to genital manipulation, biting, scratching, pinching, eye gouging, or are you simply working it from a MMA stand point of working to get guard and then up to your feet?  Yes this is a very hard area to ?practice? but it can be drilled simply by putting it into your head when you?re drilling (and I can do this hear, bite here, etc).  One will give up their mount position of GNP quite quickly to get their opponents hands of their balls.  Let us not forget about the femoral artery that is at biting reach also.  The same thing goes for other positions with the SD essentials.  This however is only in reference to EH situations; working in weapons is a whole other story.  I guess in short, think of what your goals are and adapt your training to meet them.  Think about the area you live in, what situations you could encounter, and what your goal would be if met with someone you would need to defend yourself against.

Interesting,
Looking at these weapons as different range tools it would be hard to pick between a bat and a fork.  Personally, closing the distance on the bat yielding person might lead to a domination by the person with a fork.

I remember back in the day with my Sifu learning the shoulder check which evolved out of the sword being inserted into the body and having to pull it back out with the body staying stationary.  Then again, we were talk of a long blade, not short.

John,
Might I recommend Inosanto's Dumog tape in his Definitive Series?  Higot Hubud Lubud translates to tie, untie and blend and is not limited to only one drill.  Erik Paulson and Guro Dan do a great drill showing the usage of hubud at empty hand range ( trapping range, clench, etc).  After seeing the drills anyone can accept the importance of hubud.  I have seen it in just about every fight I have ever watched, including boxing that enters empty hand range.

Corey,
Let me assure you that I am in the same place.  I wear the street hockey gloves which are a little smaller than the lacrosse gloves when fighting with rattan sticks.  We also have a stick that is inbetween a SMAK-STIK/Action-Flex and a real rattan stick.  The sting, but don't hurt so when using them I only wear batting gloves.

I could not find anywhere on the package, prod or web site that said the voltage.  Good question though and I am now wondering myself.

Gruhn

538
O,
One thing I forgot to mention about the prod I got.  It says that it is not intended to incapacitate but rather cause pain.  I must attest the pain isn?t just a little shock.  I had my girlfriend hit me with it on the calf and before she did I decided to try to do something simple at the same time to see if it did in fact affect my mental ability.  I started counting down from 10 and told her to hit me when ever she wanted.  My goal was to continue to count while I was hit and after.  She hit me at 8 and I lost all memory of what number I was on and my immediate reaction was to scream and shake from the pain.  I could feel where I was hit for about five minutes and then after had no pain at all.  The pain felt as a shock does (if you know what getting shocked feels like) but infested with tiny teeth penetrating my entire lower leg.  She hit me for less than a second.  My conclusion, it does have an effect on the mental state but focuses more on pain.  I believe if I was hit with it for a long period of time I would remain conscious.

Crafty,

Here ya go! http://www.mytscstore.com/detail.asp?pcID=8&paID=1038&sonID=179&productID=976 . I was just thinking about how to possibly convert one of these into a training blade.  With out letting too much of my secret out, it would be a slip on conversion meaning that the prod would remain stock.  The problem I see though is that the arc of electricity is made via two connections; a training blade would only offer one continuous feed since it is only one blade.  Never the less I think I am going to try and make a prototype off of the prod once I figure out the electrical theory.

« on: July 14, 2005, 01:07:48 PM »
I have not done much fighting at all with minimal protection but I?ll give this question a shot.  I think it depends on what you consider protection.  The first generation masks and batting gloves are extremely close to no protection.  While they do offer protection against as Guro Crafty states in the first series of RCSF tapes against facial deformities such as getting a lip ripped off, they still don?t offer much.  The new fencing masks are a lot better and can protect rather well.  I think because of this any fights done with batting gloves and a first generation mask are good examples of what ?no? protection might bring.

Gruhn

541
In relation,
I think a cattle prod type device would make more sense since they only cause pain in the area of contact that you get hit.

Quote
Cattle prods are similar to stun guns in design -- they apply an electrical current across two electrodes -- but they serve a completely different function. A stun gun uses an electrical charge to incapacitate someone, while a cattle prod applies a charge to get a person or animal moving. A cattle prod only causes pain, it does not significantly affect the muscles and nervous system of the body.
These two devices differ mainly in voltage. The voltage in a stun gun is high enough to dump electricity into the entire body. The lower voltage in a cattle prod only shocks someone at the point of contact.

This would leave the person who got hit or in our case slashed or stabbed aware of where this happened rather than having it feel like the slash happened to the entire body.

Gruhn

542
Interesting,
I find it weird that no one has actually made a blade like stun gun that can discharge on contact.  I am thinking of looking into the project and seeing if anyone is interested in building a prototype.  The marker knives are great but they don't draw the realism that an actual shock would bring which I assume would be the CLOSEST to a real cut that anyone could safely get.  I assume saftey is the reason it has not been done yet because of regulations and such.

ALSO: I work with a group that utilizes STUN GUN technology to add a little more consiquence to knife sparring. The long handle ones that resemble a short stick work best.  Take care,  Tom

What type of device do you use?  All the Stun(t) Guns I have seen seem very cheeply maid and I worry about dropping them.  Because of this I purchased a Cattle Prod that I bet I could drop off a building and it would be fine http://www.mytscstore.com/detail.asp?pcID=8&paID=1038&sonID=179&productID=976 .  Does your gun resemble a knife?
