The umbrella looks like it’s fairly close to a reverse roof block.

It looks a little tighter, but just as easy to retaliate from.

A way that I like to think of both the roof and the umbrella is that we are using the wind up motion of each strike in question as the defense,

I would also note that the roof is more of a block and the umbrella a merge.

It takes some people a while to get a feel for the umbrella, but once gotten it is of great practical value.
